The modern design movement began in the early 20th century at the Bauhaus School in Germany where they questioned traditional design of everyday things and developed a new aesthetic based on analysis of functional use and emerging manufacturing technology. The phrase “form follows function” underlies the philosophy of design based primarily on use, not style. In modern kitchens, design is focused on the integration of the diverse elements of cabinetry; appliances and work flow into a whole aesthetic form as opposed to the more traditional approach of individualizing these pieces.
